How to Give Back this Holiday Season

With the holidays upon us, our hearts and minds naturally gravitate towards thoughts of gratitude, peace, and harmony. It’s the season of giving. Wacoans who want to be involved can look around at the many local opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others.

Giving back to the community plays a pivotal role in how our society functions. The holiday season provides a wealth of possibilities to truly embrace this season as “the most wonderful time of the year” for families, individuals, and even our fuzzy friends!

We’ve selected a few of our favorite ways to spread some holiday cheer:

The mission of the US. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program is to bring the joy of Christmas to less fortunate children within our hometown. Whether you choose to be a toy drop site, a volunteer, or host an event, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get involved. Reach out to Toys for Tots today; their campaign deadline is December 14th.

Caritas provides urgent support to people in need within our community. Volunteers are the backbone of Caritas , with a wide range of ways to donate your time or resources. Fuzzy Friends Rescue accepts volunteers of all ages! Don’t have time to volunteer? Stop by on Saturday, December 7th, from noon to 3 pm for pictures taken with Santa Paws…kids and dogs welcome! Click here for all the details of the event. Please bring proof of current rabies and distemper/parvo vaccines for any dogs wishing to visit Santa.. A $10 donation is suggested to go towards benefiting the organization. While you’re there, why not bring home your own “fuzzy friend” or consider becoming a foster family!

Friends for Life help the elderly and people with disabilities live independently as long as possible. They protect and care for those who are unable to care for themselves and bring generations together to enrich lives. Check out the volunteer opportunities available here. You can also view their Wish List page, which includes an Amazon wish list for Adult Day Care and Gifts for Grannies found here.

Mission Waco Toy Store provides an outlet for low-income families to purchase gifts at an 80% discount off the retail price. Mission Waco invites you to serve others by donating new items, by volunteering, and by participating as a drop site or by giving funds for new toys. Click here for options to serve.

The Salvation Army of Waco helps individuals and families to rebuild their lives. Their emergency shelters, community kitchen, senior and handicapped apartments, inmate re-integration programs, youth activities, disaster services, food pantry, worship services, and other programs help meet needs by aiding those left behind by a prospering society or affected by disaster or crisis. Click here for a variety of options available where you can get plugged in, from working in the community kitchen to organizing activities for our seniors!
